What a timely and under-appreciated issue.

In addition to watching newspapers struggle, we're seeing similar problems with local TV affiliates. Some that used to cover a fair amount of medical news (e.g., information about new therapies or treatments now available at the community hospital) are only doing a few stories a month. Last I heard, one of the affiliates in Boston wasn't sending out camera crews for healthcare news any more.

I think this affects seniors in a manner that's similar to cuts at newspapers. Hopefully those who do choose to move to online news consumption will still be able to find it from local journalists who know the community.
