Top 10 Journalistics Posts of 2010

The last Journalistics post of 2009 was the “Top 9 Posts of 2009.” It seems fitting that the last post of 2010 should be the Top 10 Posts of 2010, you know, keeping with tradition and all.

Before I get to the list, I’d like to thank all of you who read Journalistics on a regular basis. It’s been your ongoing support that has continued to motivate me to keep on blogging. Journalistics is here for you, the readers. If you have any suggestions for topics you’d like us to cover, or ways we can improve the blog, please let me know.

Without further delay, here’s the list of Top 10 blog posts from 2010:

1. The Top 25 Newspapers Ranked by Google PageRank – this post ruffled a few feathers (as the comments indicate), but it was a look at how the top 25 newspapers in the country fared when ranked by criteria other than circulation. Across almost any factor I looked at over a series of posts, the New York Times was the only paper to consistently rank high (dominating in some categories).

2. The Top 25 Newspapers Ranked by Twitter Followers – like the Google PageRank comparison, this look at the top 25 newspapers (by circulation) re-sorted by Twitter Followers was popular (and equally controversial). There are a lot of smaller papers out there that dominate social media (read the comments on this post).

3. PR Tools That Don’t Rhyme with Vision or Focus – everyone knows about the mainstream tools, but what about all the other products (especially the free ones) that help PR professionals do their jobs (you know, like the free media and awards research tools Journalistics’ sponsor mBlast).

4. Facebook for Public Relations – Facebook launched a bunch of different tools to help PR professionals do their jobs. The Facebook for Public Relations (and Facebook for Media) Pages were most significant from my perspective. Is anybody using these resources? Sounds like a follow up post.

5. Dealing with Haters and Pottymouths on Your Newsroom’s Facebook Page – it’s pretty impressive that this guest post from Kim Wilson made the top 10, since it was one of the most recent posts to go up – a sign of the timeliness and relevancy of this topic.

6. How to Build a Better Online Newsroom – I looked at the newsrooms of some of the largest technology companies out there to glean some best practices for online newsroom development – this post summarizes the suggestions.

7. The Best PR Blogs Out There – my personal opinion of the best PR blogs (as of the writing of this post). If you’re pruning your RSS reader heading into 2011, check out this post.

8. The Elements of Style: Twitter Edition – anything attached to this classic is popular. If you love The Elements of Style, and you use Twitter, this post is for you.

9. Build a Stronger Network – plain and simple advice is always popular on the blog. This post on networking tips was one of my favorites from the past year. I heard from more readers via email on this post than any I have written in the past (a lot of ‘thank yous’ and stories about how they were using the advice to expand their relationships). I hope it helps more people after this post!

10. 8 Ways Your Newsroom Can Get More Out of Facebook – another great guest post from Kim Wilson from the past couple of months. If you’re working in media and responsible for your organization’s Facebook Page, you’ll want to check out this post.

That’s the list of Top 10 Posts from 2010. To qualify for the ranking, the posts had to be published during 2010. I point this out, because as far as traffic goes, two posts from 2009 would have been in the Top 10 of 2010 list if that weren’t the case. In case you want to go back in the archives a bit, you might find last year’s #1 or #7 post worth the read:

  • Best Schools for Journalism – this headline is deceptive and I caught a lot of flack for it. It’s basically the results of a Twitter poll and not a scientific analysis of the truly ‘best’ schools out there (though it would be hard to disagree with any of those that made the list).
  • 91 Journalism Blogs and Websites You Will Love – I spent the most time researching this post, and it was worth every second. I’ve personally gone back to this list again and again when I’ve been brainstorming ideas for journalism topics to write about.
